One of the most fascinating things about Botox®

Cosmetic is that it’s produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium.  This purified protein is a non-invasive, and non-surgical, treatment administered by a physician, and it can temporarily cause a reduction in moderate to severe frown lines in patients from ages 18-68.  The treatment typically lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, during which one of our physicians injects tiny amounts of Botox® Cosmetic into the muscle that creates those persistent lines.

While results may vary, our patients report a high level of satisfaction with this procedure, which is consistent with Botox’s ® rapid rise in popularity.  Approved in 2002, it is now the most popular non-surgical procedure for facial rejuvenation.  Our physicians use it to remove wrinkles and lines around the eyebrows and eyes, below the mouth, and near the chin.

Though Botox® is an effective treatment for wrinkles, it is able to provide additional benefits.  One symptom of aging is a tight, almost “hardened” appearance to the face, which detracts from patients’ natural beauty.  Because Botox® relaxes the facial muscles, that tense look disappears, which results in a smoother, more supple and youthful looking face.

Most people think aging is about gravity, thinning facial skin, and exposure to the sun (especially in Bakersfield).  But everyday stress and tension are just as harmful.  Our Botox® Cosmetic patients tell us, time and time again, how completely surprised they are by the results.  By relaxing the frown lines, we are able to widen the area around the eyes and forehead, which makes patients’ noses appear more petite.  The face itself suddenly becomes more balanced, as the upper and lower sections of the face are re-proportioned.  Most patients expect to rid themselves of crow’s feet or frown lines, but are amazed when they see the soft contours of their face return.

About the Procedure

One of the biggest benefits to Botox® is that this minor procedure only takes 10 to 15 minutes, so you can return to your busy life immediately, whether that’s as a professional in the Kern County oil industry, or as a busy mother in Rosedale.  The results take approximately 7 to 10 days to appear.  Many patients report that it is an amazing experience to watch themselves become a bit younger in the mirror every day.

A treatment is able to relax the muscles for approximately 4 to 6 months, so Botox® Cosmetic must be rejuvenated regularly.  However, Botox® does stop some of the aging process.  As long as you use Botox®, you won’t form additional wrinkles because the muscles responsible for those are disabled.

Some patients worry that their expressions will be compromised, and that they may not be able to smile or use their face to express themselves as they used to.  However, our surgeons carefully study each patient’s animation and facial expressions before injecting Botox® Cosmetic.  will pay close attention to your individual smile and facial features, and will only then inject the specific dosage to the target areas, leaving you with fewer wrinkles while preserving your individual beauty.

Other Applications

While Botox® is known for its ability to restore a youthful face to its full beauty, it also has several different uses.  One of these is the control of sweat production in the hands, feet, and underarms.  Patients who suffer from excessive sweating often find relief through the application of Botox Cosmetic.  Because we live in such a hot climate, many patients find that the summers are much more bearable when they use Botox® for this purpose.

How Does It Work?

Over time, muscle activity forms the stubborn wrinkles and frown lines between your eyebrows, around your eyes and mouth, and near your chin.  Botox® Cosmetic works by blocking the nerve impulses from the injected muscles.  This limits the activity of those muscles, resulting in a much smoother and youthful looking face.

You will see a marked improvement within just a few days of having the injections.  Typically, the moderate to severe lines between your eyebrows improve first, but lines weaken and continue improving for up to a month.  Results can last up to 4 months.  Almost 90% of men and women rated the improvement to their appearance as moderate to better during the clinical trial stage of Botox® Cosmetic.  Your results may vary.

How Long Does It Last?

The beautiful, youthful face you can get from Botox® can last up to 4 months.  It’s important to note that if you decide to discontinue treatment, the wrinkles will eventually return to their pre-injection appearance.

Is it Painful?

Botox® injections are usually only mildly uncomfortable.  Your surgeon may decide, prior to starting the treatment, to numb the area with anesthetic cream or a cold pack.  While there may be some small discomfort, the entire procedure takes only 10 to 15 minutes, and you will most likely be able to return to your normal day immediately after the procedure.

Is Botox for Me?

Botox® Cosmetic injections are extremely safe, but those patients with infections at the proposed injection sites, as well as patients with a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation, should not have this treatment.  Your physician will discuss your medical history with you.  Any patient who has ALS, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or any other neuromuscular disorder may be at increased risk for serious side effects.

Side Effects

Most patients have minimal side effects after Botox® Cosmetic treatments.  Some common side effects include localized pain, inflammation, tenderness and swelling, redness, bleeding or bruising, and infection.

As with most cosmetic procedures, the costs of Botox® Cosmetic treatments are not covered by insurance and will vary based upon the surgeon’s level of experience and the difficulty of the individual procedure.  You should know that any procedure offered under market value is often a sign that the surgeon is inexperienced or is cutting corners.  Our costs are comparable to centers and surgeons with the same high level of care and expertise.
